RYA Dinghy Instructor Training 2025

This non-residential course takes place over six days, starting with the pre-entry assessment day. It is a training and continually assessed course. A  moderator will do the final assessment on the last day. Attendance on all five days is essential.

Pre-Entry Assessment Dates: 19th & 26th April, 10th & 17th May 2026

Training Course Dates: 8th - 12th July 2026

Course Fee: £375 for NSSA Members, £410 Non-Members

The requirements for the Instructor course are :

  • Minimum age 16 years

  • Pre-entry sailing assessment

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate

  • Valid First Aid certificate – check RYA website for acceptable certificates 

  • RYA Membership

  • On line Safe and Fun Certificate  

  • Passport size photo

  • G14 Logbook

The sailing pre-requisites should be in place prior to the course. Contact NSSA for RYA Level 2 Powerboat (£120) and/or First Aid (60) must be completed prior to the course. 

Pre-Entry Test - Book one of 19th & 26th April, 10th & 17th May 2026

Arrive for 9.30 and bring usual sailing gear and lunch. The length of the test will depend upon the weather conditions and number of participants on the course.

This is a practical assessment of your sailing ability. Tasks will include:

  • Sail around a triangular course

  • Sail a tight circular course

  • Sail a 'follow the leader' course

  • Pick up a man-overboard dummy

You may also be asked to do any of the following:

Sail rudderless, lee-shore landing and departure, pick up a mooring, anchor, come alongside a moored boat, recover a capsize dinghy and sail away

On completion of the course your details will be sent to the RYA who will issue your DI certificate
